Jack Wayne Swift, age 85, of Mountain City, TN passed away on Sunday morning, December 3, 2023 in Texas. He was born March 22, 1938 in Johnson County TN to the late Isaac Allen Swift and Carrie Emeline Harper Swift. In addition to his parents Jack was preceded in death by his wife of 48 years Mary J. Ward Swift, brother, Charles Ray Swift, brother-in-law, Theodore “Ted” Shores.

 

Jack was a graduate of Johnson County High School class of 1956 then attended King College. He was a United States Army Veteran. Jack was former sports editor and current columnist for The Tomahawk newspaper, working for 30 years in newspaper, writing “This & That” column for the Tomahawk since 2003. He served with the Johnson County Historical Society and was president from 1992-1994. He helped to publish Volumes I, II, and III of the Johnson County History Books and was active in all aspects of the Society. He also helped publish the Pictorial History of Johnson County. Jack was the Historian for Johnson County for 18 years. He was a member of American Legion Post 61, past adjutant and vice commander. Jack also was with the Country Music Band - The Country Cousins. Jack was a member of First Christian Church, former Sunday School Superintendent and Deacon on Church Board.

 

Those left to cherish his memories include his sisters-in-laws, Nancy Carol Shores and Nora Mae Swift; niece, Debbie Flanders & husband John of Sherman Texas, nephew, Greg Swift & wife Shelia of Powell TN, great nieces, Emily Flanders and Melissa Zevallos, great nephews, Allen Flanders, Adam and Joshua Swift, cousins and friends.

 

The family will receive friends from 12:00 - 2:00 on Saturday, December 9, 2023 at Mountain City Funeral Home. The funeral service will follow at 2:00 with Minister Dwayne Dickson officiating, Music by Nancy Davis. Entombment will follow the funeral from the Sunset Memorial Park Mausoleum. Pallbearers will be Allen Flanders, Donnie Henson, Ronnie Henson, Travis Long, Tony Long, Adam Swift, Joshua Swift and Oscar Zevallos. Honorary pallbearers are First Christian Church Board members. Military honors to be accorded by the Johnson County Honor Guard at the Mausoleum.

 

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the American Legion Post 61, c/o Steve Elk, 238 Malcolm Fritts Lane, Mountain City, TN 37683 or the Johnson County Historical Society, 716 South Shady Street, Mountain City, TN 37683.
