Herbert Ward

Herbert Ward passed away in his sleep July 15, 2024. Herbert was born May 6, 1931 to Parks and LouDella Ward in Watauga County, NC. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by all seven of his brothers, Ben, Troy, Jess, Grover, Lonnie, Frank and Bob Ward; two sisters, Barbara Jean Stout and Sue Fallen; his beloved wife, Jane Ward and three of his sons, Tony, Keith and Brian Ward.

Those left to cherish his memories include his son, Gregory Ward; daughter, Janet Ward Brooks; son-in-law, Jesse Brooks; his grandchildren who he was most proud of, Adam Ward (Tiffanie), Courtney Brooks, Brittney Brooks, Sara Ward and his great grandchildren, Jania, Renesernee, and Zyra Ward.

Herbert spent his younger childhood days growing up around the Watauga River and of course helping on the family farm. He enlisted with the United States Army at age 17 and fought in the Korean War. He received the purple heart award during his service after getting wounded from a shot in the neck. He was in the 2nd Infantry (Indian Head) Division and their motto was “Second to None.” Along with his purple heart award, he received a CIB, Korean service medal with 5 battle stars, and a UN medal. After his service in the US Army, he found work in Michigan with General Motors and worked in Chicago before moving back to Tennessee and starting his family. Herbert’s hobbies back in the day were working on cars and making moonshine. Later in life he found the most pleasure working in his garden, reading his Bible and listening to bluegrass music.

A graveside service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, July 18, 2024 at Mountain Home National Cemetery with Pastor Doug Roberts officiating and military honors provided by the Johnson County Honor Guard.
