Curtis E Sluder

Curtis E. Sluder, age 67, of Shady Valley, Tennessee, passed away on Saturday, August 27, 2011 at Franklin Woods Community Hospital, Johnson City, Tennessee following a lengthy illness. He was born on August 21, 1944 in Mountain City, Tennessee, the son of Letha Wright Sluder of Shady Valley, Tennessee and the late Otis Sluder. In addition to his father, Curtis was preceded in death by a brother,, Cline Leon Sluder and his mother-in-law, Kathleen Burgess. Curtis graduated from ETSU in August of 1968 and on the same day he married Linda Burgess. Following graduation, he taught school for over twelve years and served as principal during this time also. He then served as County Executive/Mayor of Johnson County, Tennessee for two separate terms. While serving as County Executive/Mayor, Curtis was instrumental in many accomplishments for the residents of Johnson County. Between his terms as County Executive, Curtis was employed by the Northeast Tennessee Correctional Complex, where he was an educational instructor. Curtis was a public servant and advocate for his community. He had a deep love for Johnson County and desire to see it prosper. He was a member of Shady Valley Baptist Church and attended Sutherland Community Church. Curtis is survived by his wife of 43 years, Linda Burgess Sluder; daughter and son-in-law, Leslie Carol and Forrest Sharpe; granddaughter, Catherine Catie' Voretta Hill; grandson, Samuel Curtis Swecker, all of Fish Springs, TN; mother, Letha Opal Wright Sluder of Shady Valley, TN; brothers: Herbert Lamar and wife Betty Jenkins Sluder of Winchester, VA, Alton Lowell and wife Shirley Jones Sluder, and Kenneth Allen and wife Eula Deel Sluder, all of Shady Valley TN; sister-in-law, Kathy Wallace Sluder of Shady Valley, TN; father-in-law, Robert Keith Burgess; in-laws: Bud and Ingrid McComas, Dennis and Kate Burgess, Terry and Karen Anderson, Ronald and Monette Gentry and Brent and Donna Burgess and numerous nephews, nieces and cousins. All of Curtis' family and friends will miss his wit and sense of humor. The family will receive friends from 6-8:00 p.m. on Monday, August 29, 2011 at Mountain City Funeral Home with a Memorial Service following at 8:00 p.m. Pastor Dave Allen and Minister Jim Hutchinson to officiate. Music will be provided by Ms. Donna Allen and Mr. Jeff Sharpe. The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to Amedisys Home Health, Johnson County Rescue Squad and all the health care professionals. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Johnson County Rescue Squad, 203 Vandilla Street, Mountain City, TN 37683 At other times, the family will receive friends at the home, 1325 Sluder Road, Shady Valley, TN 37688.
