Luther 'L.J.' Whaley

Luther L.J.' Whaley, age 74, of Butler, Tennessee, passed away on Sunday, December 4, 2011 at the Johnson County Community Hospital. He was born on December 18, 1936, the son of the late Ruby Whaley. He had retired from the Tennessee DOT. L.J. loved being outdoors, especially fishing and working in his vegetable garden. More than anything though, he loved spending time with his family and friends. L.J. attended Elk Mills Baptist Church. He is survived by daughters and sons-in-law: Lori and Mike Davis of Mountain City, TN and Lisa and Tim Matherly of Winder, GA; mother of his children, Wilma Whaley Ball, also of Winder GA; sister, Wannette Odom of Butler, TN; special grandchildren: Michael Davis and wife Caitlyn of Bristol, TN, Brittany Davis of Mountain City, TN, Dawson Matherly and Autumn Matherly, both of Winder, GA; special niece, Sandy Miller; special friends, Howard and Barbara Rainbolt; his beloved dog and companion, Sadie and several nieces, nephews and cousins. The family will receive friends from 6-8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 6, 2011 at Mountain City Funeral Home with the funeral service to follow at 8:00 p.m. with Rev. David Hankal and Travis Campbell to officiate. Music will be provided by granddaughter, Autumn Matherly and Toby Rainbolt. Graveside Service and Interment will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 7, 2011 at Lakeview Cemetery, Butler, Tennessee. Active pallbearers are: Mike Fritts, Howard Rainbolt, Rick Campbell, Joyce Walsh, Bill Murphy and Lester Reece. Honorary pallbearers are: Danny Sullivan, Tom Keplinger, Dr. James Shine, Dr. Charles Cole, Bob Campbell, Carl Whaley and Jim Smith. The family wishes to extend their gratitude and appreciation to the Johnson City Medical Center Hospice & Staff, Dr. James Shine & Staff, Barbara and Howard Rainbolt, Staff of Johnson County Community Hospital and to all of L.J's family and friends for all of the calls, visits and prayers. At other times, the family will receive friends at the home, 166 Watson Road, Butler, TN 37640.
