Mildred Jean Cowie

Mildred Jean Cowie, age 80, of Laurel Bloomery, Tennessee, passed away on Sunday, May 6, 2012 at her residence, surrounded by her family. She was born on May 14, 1931 in St. Catherine's Hospital of Brooklyn, NY, to the late Otto Hettesheimer and Elizabeth Knoerzer Hettesheimer. Mildred attended Point Jefferson High School and graduated as a nurse in 1951. She was an intensive care nurse at the Community Hospital for several years. Mildred later attended Broward County Vocational School, where she graduated with her Pre-K Teacher certification. She taught preschool in Broward County, Florida and had also been a Girl Scout Leader for 20 years. Mildred was a member of Pleasant Home Baptist Church since 1980 and had taught Sunday school until 2008. In addition to her parents, Mildred was preceded in death by her husband, James A. Cowie. Mrs. Cowie is survived by two daughters and one son; Jean Palmer of Bristol, TN and Jill Hall of Pompano Beach, FL and James R. Cowie of Church Hill, TN; adopted children, Cathy and Sonny Souder of Laurel Bloomery, TN; grandchildren, Joshua Stevans and wife Rachel Stevans, Meagan Stevans, Lindsay Stevans, Mark Stevans and fiancé Meredith Wachs, Whitney Hall, Cortney Hall, Christina Cowie, Matthew Cowie, and Alexander Cowie; great-grandchildren, Jonah Wallace, Evan Morefield, Ryder Stevans and Rissa Stevans; sister, Helen Hettesheimer; brother, Frederick Hettesheimer; and several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 6 - 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 8, 2012 at Mountain City Funeral Home with the service to follow at 8:00 p.m. with Pastor Greg Blackburn officiating. Music will be provided by Meagan Blackburn, pianist, and Kerry Gentry and Russell Robinson, soloist. Greeter will be Matthew Blackburn. Grandchildren and friends will be pallbearers. The graveside service and interment will be conducted at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 9, 2012 at the Wills Cemetery.
