Haven N. Shoemaker

Haven N. Shoemaker, Sr., age 75, of Mountain City, Tennessee, passed away Monday, September 10, 2012 at his residence. He was born on August 16, 1937 to the late John Franklin Shoemaker I and Lora Rowland Shoemaker. In addition to his parents, Haven was preceded in death by eight sisters and brothers. Haven was a United States Army Veteran and was stationed in Germany, as well as Cuba during the Cuban Missile Crisis. He retired from General Motors and was a Committee Chairman with United Auto Workers (UAW) for many years. Haven enjoyed boxing and was the 1957 Maryland Amateur Featherweight Champion and the US Army European Theatre Champion. He and his wife Carolyn moved to Johnson County 18 years ago. He worked at Northeast Correctional Complex for four years. Haven enjoyed working with his hands and especially enjoyed woodworking. He was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. Haven is survived by his wife of 48 years, Carolyn Shoemaker; sons and daughter-in-law: Kenny Shoemaker Sr. of Mountain City, TN and Haven Shoemaker Jr and wife Patty of Hampstead, MD; brother, Percy Shoemaker of Lincoln, AL; grandchildren: Haven Shoemaker III of Hampstead, MD and Kenny Shoemaker Jr. of Myrtle Beach, SC; several nieces and nephews and many special friends. The family will receive friends from 7-9:00 p.m. Thursday, September 13, 2012 at the Mountain City Funeral Home Chapel. A funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Friday, September 14, 2012, also at the Mountain City Funeral Home, with Pastor Jim Norman to officiate. Graveside Service and Interment with Military Honors, conducted by the Johnson County Honor Guard, will follow from the Clint Gilley Cemetery, JC Norton Road, Warrensville, NC. Pallbearers will be: Burl Wheatley, Jerry Roland, Scott Roland, James Roland, Kenny Shoemaker and Haven Shoemaker. Honorary pallbearers are all of Haven's special friends. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Building Fund, 3385 Roan Creek Road, Mountain City, TN 37683. At other times, the family will receive friends at the home, 929 Noah Snyder Road, Mountain City, TN 37683.
