Isaac Ned Oliver, 87, of Creston, NC, and Mountain City, TN, passed away on Sunday, December 16, 2012, at the James H. Quillen Veterans Affairs Hospital in Johnson City, TN. He was born in Creston, NC, to James Arthur and Etta Jane Pennington Oliver. He lived most of his life in Creston, NC, and Mountain City, TN. Ned was a veteran of World War II. He served in the US Navy in the Third Fleet in the Pacific theatre near Saipan, Iwo Jima, and the Philippines, amongst other locations. During his enlistment, Ned was a pharmacist mate on the USS Mazama, an ammunition ship. Ned was a passionate man who enjoyed farming, road trips, flying airplanes, shopping for cars and tractors, talking about politics, and taking naps under the tree in the front yard. His primary occupation was as a farmer, but he also dabbled in various other businesses throughout the years. Ned married Beulah Jean Reece Oliver of Mountain City, TN, in 1958. They have been married for over 54 years. Ned was extremely proud of his son, Jim. He is survived by his wife Beulah, sister Ina Mae Oliver, son Jim Oliver and wife Jessica, granddaughter Jacqueline Reece Oliver, sister-in-law, Anna Mae Hodges; brother-in-law, Bill Reece and wife Mary Nell, as well as several nieces, nephews, and friends. The family will receive friends and family on Thursday, December 20, 2012 from 12 - 2:00 pm at Mountain City Funeral Home in Mountain City, TN with funeral services to immediately follow with Pastors Darrell Graybeal and Harry Wills to officiate. Music will be provided by Brenda Graybeal. Ned will be laid to rest, following the funeral service, with full military honors conducted by the Johnson County Honor Guard at the Oliver Family Cemetery in Creston, NC, on the Oliver Family Triple "O" Farm. Pallbearers will be Lloyd Miller, Joe Roten, George Roten, Dale Greer, Gary Goodin, Kenneth Oliver, Wayne Patrick, and Larry Reece. Honorary Pallbearers are Peepsie Graybeal, Jay Owens, Charles Oliver, Mike Reece, Jim Reece, John Reece, Rick Reece, Gary Reece, Shane Reece, Gordon Hodges, Jim Crowe, Ray Crowe, Tommy Reece, Ronda Reece, Roddy Reece and Keith Wilson. Memorial donations may be made to the Big Laurel Church of Christ, 4693 Big Laurel Road, Creston, NC, 28615. At other times, the family will receive friends at the home 231 Circle Drive, Mountain City, TN 37683.
