Vernon McQueen

Vernon W. McQueen, age 85, of Shady Valley, Tennessee, passed away on Thursday, January 24, 2013, surrounded by his family in the home of his son, Gary, where he had resided for the past three years. He was born on May 22, 1927 to the late Roby and Leona McQueen. In addition to his parents, Vernon was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Mabel Irene McQueen, who passed away on March 5, 2010; daughter-in-law, Joyce McQueen and sisters: Jean Reece and Kathleen Maxwell. Vernon was a well-known member of his community, where he was a Post Master and mail carrier for 35 years. He was devoted to his family, loved to garden, enjoyed watching the Atlanta Braves baseball games, reading, telling stories from his past and always helping his fellow man. He was a member of Shady Valley Baptist Church, located on Hwy 91. Vernon was a World War II Veteran, having served in the United States Navy. Vernon is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law: Buddy and Anne McQueen of Ringold, GA, Gary and Deborah McQueen of Shady Valley, TN and Jim and Judy McQueen of Dallas, GA; seven grandchildren and sixteen great grandchildren: Heather Brown and husband Robbie and their son Isaac; Tammy Mazur and husband Brian and their children, Colton and Boone; Ryan McQueen and wife Andrea and their children, Grayson, Griffin, Morgan, Makenna and Lexi; Austin McQueen and wife Julia and their children Madison, Abigail and Ava; Eric McQueen and wife Tiffany and son, Brody and daughter, Brooke; James McQueen and wife Mindy and their children, Zachary, Brooke and Alivia; and Matt McQueen and his wife Amanda; two sisters: Betty Hurley of Abingdon, VA and Shirley Shumate of Shady Valley, TN several nieces and nephews. Funeral Services will be conducted at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, January 27, 2013 at the Shady Valley Baptist Church with Pastors Danny Williams, Derl McCloud and Harry Cunningham to officiate. The family will receive friends from 2-3:00 p.m. prior to the service. Graveside Service and Interment with Military Honors will follow in the Blevins Cemetery and will be accorded by the Johnson County Honor Guard. Pallbearers are: Monta Steagall, Huey Long, Stephen Tolliver, Lonnie Long, Robbie Brown and Tony Burchfield.
