Mary Elizabeth Pennington, age 91, of Shady Valley, Tennessee, passed away on Monday, June 24, 2013 at Wellmont Hospice House, Bristol, TN. On the 11th of June, 2013, Mrs. Pennington received second and third degree burns while trying to extinguish the fire which caught her clothing on fire. Even being on a walker, and falling, she managed to get to her feet and extinguish the fire, which had spread to the floor and the walls of her home, before getting to the back porch. She was treated at the scene by the Emergency Medical Services, taken to Bristol Regional Trauma Center by Med-Flight, and later on to Wake Forest Burn Center, Winston Salem, NC. She was treated at the Burn Center until June 21st when she was transported to the Hospice Center in Bristol, TN. Mary Pennington was born June 17, 1922 in Greene County, TN, a daughter of Charlie Elijah Morris and his wife, Rosa Belle Brown Morris. She is preceded in death by a sister, Frances Bailey, who lived in Bulls Gap, TN and a brother, Thurman Morris, who lived in Kirkwood, PA, and her husband, Vaughn Pennington who died in 1970. Survivors include her daughter, Mary Ruth Almaroad and husband Hal of Blountville, TN; son, J. D. Pennington and wife Ruby of the home; granddaughter, Susan O'Neal and husband Jason of Bristol, TN; grandson, James Pennington, of the home; great-grandson, Benjamin Harr of Bristol, TN; and several nieces and nephews. By her request, there will be no formal service or visitation. Private Memorial Services will be held by the family. At the daughter's request, there will be a brief gathering at the Gentry Cemetery in Shady Valley, TN at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 27, 2013 with Mr. Virgil Cretsinger officiating, for friends and neighbors who wish to attend. In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully request that memorial donations be made to the Johnson County Rescue Squad, 203 Vandilla Street, Mountain City, TN or Wellmont Hospice, 280 Steeles Road, Bristol, TN 37620.
