Elmer Payne

Calvin Elmer Payne, age 96, of Mountain City, Tennessee, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, August 31, 2013 at his residence, surrounded by his family. A lifetime native of Johnson County, Elmer, was born on November 27, 1916 to the late David Payne and Effie Jones Payne. In addition to his parents, Elmer was preceded in death by his sisters: Della Vanover, Stella Simcox and Bonnie Owens and brothers: James Payne and Clay Payne . Elmer had worked for A.J. Stalcup in the sawmill business for many years. He also worked for and retired from Burlington Industries. He enjoyed being in the mountains, working in his garden and loved spending time with his family. Elmer is survived by his wife of 73 years, Cora Bernice Hammons Payne; daughters and sons-in-law: Jo Ann and Blake Atwood and Betty and Ray Vaught, all of Mountain City, TN; sons and daughter-in-law, Bill and Francis Payne of Creston, NC; Jerry Payne and Tom Payne, both of Mountain City, TN; sister, Blanche Greer of Quarryville, PA; grandchildren: Tanya Huyard, April Shelton, Michelle Michaels, Shannon Payne, Sandra Herron and Brian Vaught; great grandchildren: Shea Huyard, Ashtyn Henson, Kal'el Michaels, Kevin Shelton, Jacob Vaught and Gunner Herron; special nieces: Mary Sue and Sandy; several more nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 1-2:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 1, 2013 at the Mountain City Funeral Home Chapel. Graveside Service and Interment will follow the visitation at the Dunn Memorial Park with Pastor Buddy Morefield and Joshua Giddings to officiate. Pallbearers will be Larry Henson, Douglas Hammons, Rick Hoosier, Richard Wittenberg, Rick Curd, Ralph Vanover and Ritchie Wittenberg. Honorary Pallbearers are Elmer Hammons and Paul Hammons. At other times, the family will receive friends at the home, 851 D. Payne Road, Mountain City, TN 37683.
