Dorothy Marie Garland, born February 15, 1947, passed away peacefully in Kingsport, Tennessee on January 10, 2014. She was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas Ambrose Garland and Virginia Greer Garland of the Dewey community. She leaves behind two brothers: John Thomas Garland (Betty) and Donald Robert Garland (Susan); two sisters: Mary Ann Patterson (Larry) and Caroline Sue Dickson (Royal), as well as many nieces and nephews: Traci Smith, Tricia Thacker, Mark Garland, Maria Murphy, Dawn Benthall, Christian Patterson, Joshua Patterson, Amy Smith, and Megan Lindsey; several aunts, uncles, cousins and great nieces and nephews. Dorothy was a life-long member of the Dewey Christian Church, having perfect attendance many years. Dorothy loved music and was a talented pianist, playing at church and nursing homes. She was especially fond of her many nieces and nephews and her many cats. The family wishes to thank the Pierce House staff and residents in Big Stone Gap, VA for the many years of love and attention given to Dorothy. Visitation will be from 12:00 - 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, January, 12, 2014 the Mountain City Funeral Home in Mountain City, Tennessee. Funeral services will follow immediately at 2:00 p.m. at the funeral home with Dr. Larry E. Patterson officiating. Special Music will be provided by Ms. Annette Greer and Fred Ramsey. Interment will follow at the Sunset Memorial Park. Pallbearers are Robbie Thacker, Bill Greer, Donald Greer, Jim Greer, Christian Patterson and Joshua Patterson.
