Gervis Greenwell, age 83, of Butler, Tennessee, went to be with his Savior on Wednesday, May 14, 2014 at his home following a lengthy illness. He was born on November 23, 1930 in Fremont, Virginia to the late Anderson Dewey Greenwell and the late Roxie Jane Cowan Greenwell. In addition to his parents, Gervis was preceded in death by two sisters: Margaret Cardenia and Jean Swafford and six brothers: Haggie, James, Carl, Bruce, Bob and Lon Greenwell. Gervis was a member of Sugar Grove Baptist Church of Butler, Tennessee. Gervis was a United States Army Veteran and served during the Korean War for three years transporting the wounded to Fitz Simmons Army Hospital in Denver, CO. He was also a 20 year retiree with the Eerie Lackwanna Railroad as a switchman in Chicago, Illinois. Gervis loved to go squirrel and rabbit hunting. He was known as a great gravy-maker and good cook. He was also asked to help as a caregiver to several neighboring families. Playing with his kids and grandkids was his special moments. Anyone who knew Gervis knew he was always a kid at heart. Gervis is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Emma Molly Reece Greenwell. For the last 40 years, they made their home in Cowantown Road, Butler, TN. Their pasttime was porch sitting while looking at the lake and surrounding mountains. Gervis is also survived by four children: Kathryn and husband Johnny Arney of Mountain City, TN; James and wife Debra Greenwell of Butler, TN, Ellen and husband Vincent Marks of Columbia, SC and Joyce and husband David Rash of Trade, TN; six grandchildren and one step grandchild: Janette Roark of Columbia SC, Jocelyn and husband Steven Robbins of Mountain City, TN, Jeremy and wife Miranda Gregg of Bethel, NC, Bridget and husband Sean Kleine of Mountain City, TN, Travis and wife Brittanie Gregg of Mountain City, TN, Luke Rash of Trade, TN and Matthew Rash of Nebo, NC. Gervis was also blessed with four great grandsons: Devin, Conner and Dawson Gregg of Bethel, NC and Mason Gregg of Mountain City, TN. Funeral Services will be conducted at 3:00 p.m. Friday, May 16, 2014 at the Mountain City Funeral Home with Pastor Alan Koch to officiate. The family will receive friends from 1-3:00 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home. Graveside Service and Interment with Military Honors will follow at the Sugar Grove Baptist Church Cemetery. Military Honors will be conducted by the Johnson County Honor Guard. Pallbearers are Luke Rash, Travis Gregg, Jeremy Gregg, Matthew Rash, Sean Kleine and Steven Robbins. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Johnson County Rescue Squad, 203 Vandilla Street, Mountain City, TN 37683. At other times, the family will receive friends at 1420 Cowantown Road, Butler, TN 37640.
