Toll W. Lewis

Toll W. Lewis, age 81, of Mountain City, TN, crossed over peacefully on Monday, May 26, 2014 in Johnston Memorial Hospital. He was born in Shouns, TN (Forge Creek) to the late D.C. and Inez Smith Lewis. In addition to his parents, Toll was preceded in death by sisters, Ruby Graybeal and Ruth Lewis; brothers, Bruce and Dana Lewis; sisters-in-law, Willa Dean Lewis and Hope Madron Payne; brothers-in-law, Wilson Graybeal, John Madron, Marion Payne, and Gene Treadway, and by a nephew David Lewis. Toll retired in 2000 from Wearl Construction Co., which he owned and operated for 28 years in Bear, Delaware. He had many friends there, and in Maryland and Pennsylvania as well. Toll was highly-respected for his fine work ethic, his skill and pride in workmanship, and his sharp economic expertise and management. He was also known for his devotion to his family and home. Because of this commitment, he and his beloved wife of 51 years, Hilda Madron Lewis, returned to the mountains to build a retirement home and live out their days, surrounded by family and friends while running their cattle farm. In fact, their extraordinary, yet welcoming home became a regular gathering place for family meals and events including weddings and reunions. During his early years, Toll graduated from Riverview High School in Ashe County, NC and then attended Steed College in Johnson City, TN. He also served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War from 1952 - 53. After serving in the military, he worked in the Chrysler Corporation Accounting Department and in various construction jobs where he gained knowledge and experience needed in starting his own business. In addition to his wife Hilda, Toll is survived by his son, William and wife Michelle; granddaughter, Hannah Lewis and step grandson, Gavin Brown; brothers, Wallace Lewis and wife Ruby Lee, Kyle Lewis and Kathy Shupe, Earl Lewis and wife Opal; an aunt, Vinnie Rash; nieces, Missy Timbs, Kelly Moore, Wanda Greer, Rhonda Proffitt, Lisa Jane Lewis, Kathy Hanson, Betty Goff, and Judy Danbury, sisters-in-law, Hallie Madron Willliams and husband Mack, Helen Madron Treadway, and Sandra Madron; special friends, Patsy and Eddie Cavanaugh and Estelle Lewis, and many great nieces and nephews in Tennessee, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, and South Carolina. Funeral Services for Toll Lewis will be held at Mountain City Funeral Home on Friday, May 30 at 3pm, immediately following family visitation from 1:00 - 3:00. Rev. Ricky Campbell and Rev. Harry Wills will officiate with music provided by Joe Simcox and Rev. Campbell. Active Pallbearers will include Adam Timbs, Dalton Timbs, Robbie Timbs, Jerry Greer, Bobbie Wills, Robert Wills, Wayne Taylor, Willie Hammons, and Marty Pennington. Honorary Pallbearers will include Mack Williams, Don Walters, Kermit Lewis, Farris Thomas, Fred Dutton, and Eddie Cavanaugh. Graveside Service and Interment with Military Honors provided by the Johnson County Honor Guard will take place after the funeral in Pleasant Grove Cemetery.
