Dr. Edward Harold Mahoney, age 85, of Mountain City TN passed away peacefully on June 29, 2014 after a brief illness. Born December 12, 1928 in Talbot, TN, Dr. Mahoney grew up in the Splatter Creek community in rural Clear Springs, TN. Dr. Mahoney's passions in life were his family, his church, the great outdoors, and art. Dr. Mahoney is preceded in death by his parents, Uhlan Ketron and Anna Lee Shanks Mahoney; sisters Pauline Broyles and Inez Milburn; brother Keith Mahoney; and grandson Dustin Mahoney. Dr. Mahoney is survived by his special friend, Kitty Warden Yelton and her family; his loving children, Ed "Sandy" and Rita Mahoney, Jeff Mahoney, Maura and Steve Barnett, Brian and Cheryl Mahoney and Joe Mahoney; the mother of his children, Betty Jo Mahoney; grandchildren Bert Barnett, Mary and Dustin Lewis, Luke Barnett, John Barnett, Sean Mahoney, Kevin Mahoney and Seth Mahoney; and sister, Agnes and Bill Stockton. Dr. Mahoney graduated from Chuckey High School. He studied at East Tennessee State University, the University of Tennessee at Knoxville and the University of Tennessee College of Dentistry in Memphis. Upon graduation with a Doctorate in Dentistry, Dr. Mahoney served with the U.S. Army Dental Corps and was posted to bases near Arlington, VA and Indiantown Gap, PA. During his service, Dr. Mahoney achieved the rank of Captain before resigning so he could move his family to Johnson City, TN, to be closer to other family members. Dr. Mahoney established a significant dental practice in Johnson City for many years before moving to Mountain City, TN. While living in Johnson City, Dr. Mahoney actively attended Otterbein United Methodist, Munsey Memorial United Methodist and Evangelical United Brethren churches. Recently, Dr. Mahoney attended St. Johns United Methodist Church in Mountain City. During his life, Dr. Mahoney served on church leadership boards, sang in the church choir, taught Sunday School and was humbly devoted to God and his church. His heart was large and generous. Dr. Mahoney was very much interested in community, political and professional issues. He was elected to the Washington County Commission and served as Chairman of the Johnson City School Board. He was a member of Johnson City Civitan and Rotary Clubs. He was active in the First District Dental Society and served as president. Dr. Mahoney was an avid outdoorsman. In his spare time, he loved to fly fish for trout, hunt with his bird dogs, and generally spend time outdoors. He greatly enjoyed hiking and camping with his children while they were growing up. Dr. Mahoney was a gifted artist, taking art classes in his spare time at ETSU and also with well known artist John Alan Maxwell. He continued to paint until very recently, and produced beautiful works his family will always enjoy and appreciate. A funeral service will be held on July 13, 2014 at St. Johns United Methodist Church at336 Gentry Creek Rd in Laurel Bloomery, TN. Family and friends will gather to remember Dr. Mahoney at 2:00 followed by a funeral service at 3:00. In lieu of flowers, a charitable donation may be made to the Samaritan's Purse in his memory.
