Lavon Bass, age 79, of Mountain City, Tennessee and Okeechobee, Florida, passed away on Tuesday, October 14, 2014 at the Mountain City Care Center. He was born on July 6, 1935 to the late J. Avery Bass and Annie Maude Horne Bass. In addition to his parents, Lavon was preceded in death by a son, Tommy Van Moore, who passed away in 2000. Lavon was a retired funeral director and former owner of Bass Okeechobee Funeral Home and was a co-founder and former co-owner of Mountain City Funeral Home. Lavon and his wife Gail chanced' upon the quaint little town of Mountain City 13 years ago and fell in love with the town and its people and decided to buy a summer home there. He was a United States Air Force Veteran. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Okeechobee, Florida and attended First Baptist Church of Mountain City, Tennessee. Lavon is survived by his loving wife and best friend of 42 years, Gail M. Bass; daughter, Becky L. Barnhart and husband Jim of Okeechobee, FL; grandchildren: Joshua P. Moore of Parrish, FL, Tad A. Norman of Okeechobee, FL, Max O. Norman, also of Okeechobee, FL and Brianna Moore Swartzfager and husband David of Gainesville, FL; many nieces and nephews and many special friends and neighbors in Tennessee and Florida. Funeral Service will be conducted at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, October 15, 2014 at the Mountain City Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Ricky Campbell to officiate. The family will receive friends from 5:30 - 6:30 p.m. prior to the service. Services will also be held in Okeechobee, Florida, where Lavon will be laid to rest. In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests that memorial donations be made to the Mountain City Care Center (Activities Fund), 919 Medical Park Drive, Mountain City, TN 37683. At other times, the family will receive friends at the home, 438 Longview Private Drive, Mountain City, TN 37683 Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.mountaincityfh.com.
