John George Askins III, age 71, of Mountain City, TN, passed away on Friday, September 18, 2015 at the James H. Quillen VA Medical Center, Mountain Home, TN. He was born on October 2, 1943. He was preceded in death by his parents, his only son, grandparents and several aunts and uncles. John was a Vietnam Veteran, having honorably served in the United States Marine Corps. John was always working. He was a Service Advisor and Foreman for an auto dealership for many years and had also worked in security. However, his favorite job was working at Tweetsie Railroad. He loved meeting families and always stated that he wished that he had worked there his entire life. John was a member of the Scottish Rite, York Rite, Knight Masons and Eastern Star. He was Past Master of the Blythewood Masonic Lodge of Blythewood, SC; Member of the Jamil Shrine Center of Columbia, SC and Associate member of the Jericho Shrine Center of Kingsport, TN. John is survived by his wife of 23 years, Bette M. Askins; daughters: Lisa (Brandon, Trisyn, Jordan, Liberty and Keelan), Lynn (Rob, Miah and Noah); Mandy (Zach and A.J.) and Dena (Ron and Justin); sister, Phyllis and her husband Bob; brothers: Jim and Keith; his four legged children, Otis, Lulu and Joey and several nieces and nephews. It was John's wishes to be cremated and that no formal service be held. The family wishes to express their appreciation and gratitude to the Doctors, Nurses and Staff of the VA Medical Center for all of their kindness and care, especially to the Staff of CLC Building.
