James Patrick ‘Jim’ Coyne, age 78, of Mountain City, Tennessee, passed away on Sunday, May 29, 2016 at the VA Medical Center, in Johnson City, Tennessee. He was born in Los Angles, California on December 13, 1937 to the late Michael and Alma Colleen Eagles Coyne Rotsteen. In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by his sister, Celia Colleen Rotsteen-Silvernail; brothers: Thomas Leonard Coyne and Richard Dale Coyne and step-father, Harry L. Rotsteen. In 1955, at the age of 17, Jim enlisted in the Untied States Navy as an aviator storekeeper. He was transferred to the Naval Air Station and the Naval Supply Depot in Guam where he served during the Korean Conflict. He then enlisted in the Reserve in Sanford, Florida until 1963. In the 1960’s, while raising three daughters, he was a meat cutter at the Winn Dixie in Sanford. During this time he took classes in mechanical engineering which then led to his career in engineering at Bendix in Cape Canaveral, Florida. In 1973, he moved his family to Charlotte, North Carolina which is where he met and married Barbara, the love of his life of 35 years. He continued his career in mechanical engineering until retiring in 1998. He then moved to Mountain City, Tennessee, where he and Barbara built their retirement home which all of his children and grandchildren fondly refer to as “Granddaddy’s Mountain”.As a longtime co-manager with Barbara of Mountain City Antiques, Jim could often be seen sitting on the bench in front of the store. Jim was a member of the Mountain City Church of God. Those left to cherish his memories include his wife, Barbara M. Coyne; three daughters: Katherine Colleen Coyne Whittington and husband Danny, Patricia Helen Coyne Ross and Teri Lynn Coyne Perna; stepdaughter, Sheila Morrow Daniel and husband Phil; eleven grandchildren: Hannah Whittington, Colleen Whittington, Patrick Ross, Taylor Ross, Maleah Christie, Matthew Smith, Erin Perna, Ross Perna, Chad Perna, Chet Doherty and Mary Daniel; four great grandchildren: Thea Cummings, John Patrick Ross, Michael Benfield and Kasen Benfield, and many special friends. The family will receive friends from1-3:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 2, 2016 at the Mountain City Funeral Home with the funeral service to follow at 3:00 p.m. with Pastors Greg Davis, Jimmy Walker and Phil Turner officiating. Special music will be provided by Mr. Danny Whittington. Graveside Service and Interment with military honors accorded by the Johnson County Honor Guard will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, June 3, 2016 at the VA National Cemetery, Mountain Home, Tennessee. Pallbearers will be Patrick Ross, Chet Doherty, Taylor Ross, Chad Perna, Ross Perna, Matthew Smith, Danny Whittington and Phillip Daniel. In lieu of flowers, memorials in Jim’s memory may be made to the Rescue DOG and End of Life Sanctuary, 977 Harbin Hill Road, Mountain City, TN 37683.
