Clarence LeRoy Spannuth Jr., MD, age 68, of Butler, Tennessee, passed away on Tuesday, July 5, 2016 at the Johnson County Community Hospital. He was born on August 22, 1947 in Lebanon, Pennsylvania to Ruth Mervine Spannuth and the late Clarence Spannuth Sr. Dr Spannuth was a practicing Nephrologist with East Tennessee Medical Associates for over thirty years before transferring to the Veteran’s Administration in Johnson City, Tennessee where he would share his gift of medicine and enthusiasm for helping others with his many students. He received The Faculty of the Year Award from the ETSU Internal Medicine residents in 2010-2011 as well as The Outstanding Professor and Practitioner of the Art of Medicine from James H. Quillen College of Medicine. All considered him a great mentor. After retiring from medicine, he took up one of his many passions, farming. He loved being outside above all else and could often be found maintaining his blueberry plants, harvesting honey from his numerous beehives, or taking care of his chickens. In earlier years, he loved spending time on the Montana Bitterroot and Clark Fork Rivers fly-fishing for rainbows and browns. He was a truly selfless soul and had an unwavering faith in the Lord. All who had the pleasure of knowing him felt blessed. Clarence was a member of the Williamson Masonic Lodge in Pennsylvania. He attended Sugar Grove Baptist Church of Butler, TN. Those left to cherish his memories include his wife of 46 years, Karen Mosier Spannuth; his mother, Ruth Spannuth; daughters: Whitney S. Graybill M.D., Amanda R. Spannuth; and son, Matthew A. Spannuth; sister, Carol Sullivan; grandchildren: Haiden S. Graybill, Saige E. Graybill, Holland A. Spannuth, Jagger N. Spannuth; niece, Patty A. Hickman; several cousins; his four-legged best friend, Koda, his chocolate Labrador and all of his medical co-workers. The family will receive friends from 3-4:00 p.m. on Friday, July 8, 2016 at the Sugar Grove Baptist Church in Butler, Tn. with the funeral service following at 4:00 p.m. with Pastor Don Winters officiating. Graveside Service and Interment will follow at the Sugar Grove Baptist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers will be family and friends. Honorary pallbearers are Robert Hines, M.D., Charles Cole, M.D., Rick Moulton, M.D., Stan Vermillion, M.D. and Terry Forrest, MD. At other times, the family will receive friends at the home, 1040 Meal Camp Road, Butler, TN 37640.
