James Ray ‘Jimmy’ Smith, age77, of Mountain City, Tennessee, passed away on Tuesday, August 16, 2016. He was born on September 1, 1938 to the late James Butler Smith and Faye Taylor Smith. In addition to his parents, Jimmy was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, Patty Jones Smith, who passed away on January 31, 2016; sister, Shirley Rhymer and brother, Burley Smith. Jimmy was an avid outdoorsman and especially enjoyed hunting, fishing, and hunting arrowheads and ginseng. He was a skilled carpenter and took great pride in his work. Jimmy also farmed and was known for raising huge tomatoes. He loved for company to come visit and enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, especially his grandson Ethan and his great nephew Luke. He was a member of Sawmill Creek Church of Christ. Jimmy is survived by his daughters, Sandy Smith, who was also Jim’s caretaker, and Lisa Potter; sisters: Betty McKinnis and husband Jim, Peggy Jones and Elizabeth Morefield; brothers: Jack Smith and wife Thelma, Ted Smith and wife Mary and Joe Smith; grandchildren: Ethan Tester, Leandra Potter and Jordan Potter; great grandchildren: Elliana Owens and Zachary Owens; special niece and great nephew whom Jimmy enjoyed spending time with, Amy Bradley and Luke; very special friends: Bob Michaels, Larry Wilson, Mike Shupe; special dog, Molly; several more special nieces and nephews. Jimmy was fortunate to have three very special people in his life, who provided care to him; Jonathan Lewis, Amy Bradley and his loving daughter, Sandy. The family will receive friends from 6-7:00 p.m. Friday, August 19, 2016 at the Mountain City Funeral Home Chapel with the funeral service to follow at 7:00 p.m. with James Gentry officiating. Graveside Service and Interment will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, August 20, 2016 at the Phillippi Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Jim McKinnis, Micah Cretsinger, Jonathan Lewis, Larry Wilson, Dave Smith and Sam Smith. Honorary pallbearers are Jack Smith, Ted Smith, Ethan Tester, Bob Michaels, Mike Shupe, and Dusty Stout.
