Harold E Garland

Harold E. Garland, age 83, of Mountain City, Tennessee, passed away on Wednesday, August 17, 2016. He was born on August 23, 1932 to the late Russell and Doris Wallace Garland. In addition to his parents, Harold was preceded in death by a sister, Margaret Greer and her husband Carl, brother, Boyd Garland and wife Carolyn, infant brother, Robert Blaine Garland, and a very close friend, Jack C. Cress.   Harold was a United States Veteran, having honorably served in the Army.   He retired from Sprint Telephone in 1995 following 38 years of service. He was a charter member of the Johnson County Rescue Squad. Harold was a member of the MARC Model A Restorers Club of Unicoi, Tennessee. He enjoyed flying and was a pilot of small engine planes. Another favorite hobby included bee keeping.   He was an active member of Vaughts Gap Baptist Church, where he served as Deacon and Chairman of the Deacon Board.   Harold was a member of the Taylorsville Masonic Lodge #243 F&AM.   Those left to cherish Harold’s memories include his wife of 61 years, Betty Garland; daughter and son-in-law, Vicky and Marty Reece of Zionville, NC; sister and brother-in-law, Susie and J.C. Winebarger of Zionville, NC; brothers and sisters-in-law: Norman and Judy Garland of Boone, NC and Donald and Regina Garland of Trade, TN; grandchildren: Jeremy Reece and girlfriend Alisha Cornell, Stephanie Reece and boyfriend Darrin Tolbert, Shana Scott and husband Paul; great grandchildren: Mackensie, Shayne, Elijah ‘Eli’, Autumn, Kenleigh and Levi, several nieces and nephews and many special friends.   The family will receive friends from5:30 p.m.-7:00 p.m. Saturday, August 20, 2016 at the Mountain City Funeral Home Chapel with the funeral service to follow at 7:00 p.m. with Pastor Ricky Campbell officiating. Masonic services accorded by the Taylorsville Masonic Lodge #243 will follow the funeral. Graveside Service with Military Honors accorded by the American Legion Post #130 (135 Beartrail Road, Boone, NC), DAV of Boone and Tennessee National Guard will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, August 21, 2016 at the Sunset Memorial Park, Mountain City, TN. Pallbearers will be Jeremy Reece, Darrin Tolbert, Bill Hughes, Jerry Stansberry, Doug Garland, Ronnie Garland, Norm ‘Bud’ Reece and Ron Martin. Honorary pallbearers are Dr. Donald Walters, Dr. John Whitlock, Bill Reece, Dr. Laxton, Dr. Petty, Members of MARC and Past and Present Members of Johnson County Rescue Squad. Family, pallbearers and friends are asked to assemble by 2:00 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral home to go in procession to the cemetery.   In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Johnson County Cancer Support Group, c/o Flo Bellamy, 3510 Hwy 421 N.
