Opal Lee May Sturgill Pennington, age 90, of Creston, North Carolina, passed away on Thursday, February 8, 2018 at the Margate Health and Rehab Center of Jefferson, NC. She was born on May 25, 1927 to the late Landon and Josie Curd May. In addition to her parents, Opal was preceded in death by her first husband Teddy Sturgill; second husband, Herbert Pennington; sister, Wilma Sturgill. Opal lived in Ashe County most of her life. She loved the beautiful mountains that she called home. She was a homemaker and proud farmer. She loved being outdoors and enjoyed gardening, flowers and picking berries. Opal loved her church, taking care of her family, cooking, and sewing. She also enjoyed feeding and watching the birds. During the winter she enjoyed doing puzzles. She attended Baptist Home Baptist Church. Those left to cherish her memories include her daughters: Margaret Pennington and husband Max and Rebecca Mahaffey and husband Neal, all of Creston, NC; sisters: Vyann Pennington and Patsy Allen; brothers: Paul Woodard and Jerry Woodard, all of Creston, NC; grandchildren: Katrina and husband Tommy Calhoun, Amanda and husband David Cox, Robby Mahaffey and wife Jennifer; great grandchildren: Micaela Calhoun, Jake Calhoun, Harley Cox, Sophia Cox, Maggie Mahaffey and Tiffany Mahaffey and Teddy Mahaffey; several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 1-2:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 10, 2018 at the Mountain City Funeral Home Chapel. Funeral service will follow at 2:00 p.m. with Pastors Tommy Dollar and Fred Richardson officiating. Graveside service and interment will follow at the Lewis-Sturgill Cemetery (Roundabout Road, Creston, NC). Pallbearers will be Kenneth Sturgill, David Sturgill, Dawson Sturgill, John Sturgill, Marty Pennington and Michael Pennington. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Lewis-Sturgill Cemetery Care Fund, c/o Rebecca Mahaffey, 2250 Roundabout Road, Creston, NC 28615.
