James Howard Winters of Mountain City, Tennessee, passed away peacefully on Friday, February 23, 2018 at the Johnson City Medical Center following a valiant battle with esophageal cancer. He was born on August 19, 1943 to the late Omar Winters Sr. and Pearl Owens Winters. In addition to his parents, Howard was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Zoe Lewis, his beloved mother-in-law, Ruby Payne, and sister-in-law, Lois Winters. Howard was a member of First Baptist Church of Mountain City and gave the Lord the glory for his tremendous strength and lifetime of blessings. James Howard was a proud United States Army Veteran and recently retired from the VA Medical Center after 35 years of U.S. government service. He enjoyed bargaining and trading his “treasures” and caring for his chickens and small livestock. His most intense passion was caring for his family which includes his loving wife of 48 years, Jane Payne Winters; daughters: Maggie Lewis and husband Jeff of Shady Valley, TN and Sarah Campbell and husband Jason of Mountain City, TN; grandchildren: Ethan Campbell, Elijah Lewis, Izzy Lewis, Zane Lewis, Ezra Lewis and Colin Lewis; brothers: Bill Winters of Abingdon, VA and Omar Winters Jr. of Damascus, VA; sisters: Jane Walls and husband Dean of Damascus, VA, Trula Mahala and husband Roy of Shady Valley, TN; special brother-in-law, John Payne and sister-in-law Joan Payne; several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 6-8:00 p.m. Monday, February 26, 2018 at the Mountain City Funeral Home Chapel. Funeral service will be held at 4:00 p.m. Tuesday, February 27, 2018, also at the funeral home with Pastor Ricky Campbell and Pastor James Walls officiating. Graveside service and interment with military honors conducted by the Johnson County Honor Guard will follow at the Payne Cemetery.
